The HDS EXHYC 4500-1200 is the largest cutterhead in the HDS Belgium (Hydraulic Dredging Systems) product range. It features a 1200mm (47.2 inch) diameter cutting head with 21 teeth, driven by a 1116cc (68.1 in³) radial piston motor producing 4500 Newton-meters (3,319 pound-feet) of torque at a minimum speed of 35 RPM. It is designed to attach directly to excavator-mounted HDS dredge pumps, enabling the widest possible cutting swath for maximum-width dredging of compact soil, clay, and hard materials that would otherwise be too dense for direct pumping.

Key Features and Construction

Heavy-duty construction with Diamix HD 480 shaft sleeve for maximum wear resistance. Oversized bearings in an oil-filled housing for continuous duty operation. Seal protection wear plate with water flush connection to prevent contamination ingress. Operates across five speed settings from 40 to 80 RPM: 40 RPM for compact soil, 60 RPM for clay, and 80 RPM for mixing and fluidising heavy mud with low water content. The lowest minimum operating speed in the range (35 RPM) delivers the highest torque per unit of oil flow. Rated to SPT N-Value 55, equivalent to a cohesion factor of 5000 Gr/cm².

Full EXHYC Cutterhead Range Comparison

The HDS EXHYC cutterhead range consists of three models scaled by head diameter. The EXHYC 4200 features an 800mm head with 9 teeth and operates from 50–100 RPM. The EXHYC 4500 features a 1000mm head with 18 teeth and operates from 40–80 RPM. The EXHYC 4500-1200 is the largest model with a 1200mm head and 21 teeth, operating from 35–80 RPM for maximum cutting width per pass. All three models share the same 1116cc radial piston motor, 250 BAR operating pressure, 4500 Nm torque rating, identical hydraulic connections (2 x 1" BSP + ½" BSP drain), and mount directly onto all HDS dredge pumps using the same threaded fixation system.

Operating Modes

The EXHYC 4500-1200 is designed for three primary operating modes. At 40 RPM it delivers maximum torque (4500 Nm / 3,319 lb-ft) for cutting through compact sand and hard soil (SPT N-Value up to 55). At 60 RPM it is optimised for clay dredging, breaking up cohesive material before it enters the pump. At 80 RPM it operates as a high-speed mixer, fluidising heavy mud with low water content to allow it to be pumped efficiently by the attached HDS dredge pump.

Compatibility with HDS Dredge Pumps

The EXHYC 4500-1200 is designed to mount directly onto HDS submersible dredge pumps via the threaded fixations on the pump casing. Compatible models include the HDS 110, HDS 125, HDS 125L, HDS 160M, and HDS 160. When combined with an HDS pump, it forms a complete excavator-mounted dredging system capable of cutting, mixing, and pumping hard soils, clay, gravel, and heavy mud in a single integrated unit. These solutions are currently in operation on multiple ROHR-IDRECO suction dredgers.

When waterjetting alone can't handle compacted or hard soils, the EXHYC 4500-1200 steps in. With its 1200mm head — the widest in the HDS range — it restores optimal dredging efficiency and ensures maximum performance where waterjetting systems fall short, forming a complete excavator-mounted dredging system capable of cutting, mixing, and pumping hard soils, clay, gravel, and heavy mud across the widest possible cutting width.

Applications

Ideal for large-scale compact soil cutting, clay and hard ground dredging, mud fluidisation and mixing in wide channels, harbor and port sediment removal, construction excavation below water, environmental remediation, and major mining operations requiring maximum-width mechanical cutting. The 1200mm diameter provides the largest cutting swath in the HDS range, reducing the number of passes required on wide dredging projects.
